The Macao Polytechnic Institute held its 2012/2013 Graduation Ceremony at the MPI Multisport Pavilion on 13th June (Thursday), with 626 bachelor students and higher diploma students graduating this year.  The ceremony was presided over by Mr Chui Sai On, the Chief Executive, Mr Cheong U, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI.

Mr Chui presented graduation certificates to the best students.  He mentioned in the ceremony that the Macao SAR would continue to increase resources for tertiary education, giving assistance to local tertiary institutes in upgrading facilities and the professional development of staff, in order to create a favourable environment for teaching and research, build up a strong team of tertiary educators and to improve overall quality and academic standards.

Professor Lei wished the graduating students every success in their future endeavors, a great career and a happy life.  He believed that they would serve the community with all their heart and intellect, and become strong pillars of society.

The Government actively promotes the development of education: Dr Chui mentioned in his speech that in giving top priority to implementing the administration’s directives concerning “Improving Macao through Education” and adhering to the principle of people-oriented governance, the SAR Government had actively promoted the development of non-tertiary and tertiary education in Macao. Whilst continuously enhancing the 15-year free education scheme to provide residents with the opportunity to receive non-tertiary education, the Macao SAR has redoubled its efforts to elevate the overall standard of local tertiary education, expediting the promulgation and perfection of relevant laws, regulations and by laws, and to establish long-term mechanisms for the sustainable development of Macao’s tertiary education, with a view to promoting economic development and social progress in the Macao SAR.

Moreover, in keeping with local situations and international trends, the Macao SAR has implemented an array of policies aimed at providing residents with more opportunities to receive higher education, fostering talents in various fields and raising the overall competitiveness of local human resources, so as to achieve appropriate economic diversification and sustainable development.  In addition, resources for tertiary education have been steadily increasing, giving assistance to local tertiary institutes in upgrading facilities and the professional development of staff, in order to create a favorable environment for teaching and research, to build up a strong team of tertiary educators, and to improve Macao’s overall educational quality and academic standards.

MPI sets a new record for applications for enrollment: ProfessorLei noted that according to MPI graduate surveys, their graduates were highly acclaimed and eagerly sought after by world-class employers and higher learning institutions.  He also said that MPI received more applications for enrollment in 2013 than other higher education institution in Macao for the 8th consecutive year.  MPI would continue to do its utmost to enhance its teaching and learning, research and administration.

On behalf of the graduates Loi Sin I extended gratitude to the Institute. Students were grateful for the guidance given by the mentors of their alma mater.  Teachers had not only passed on to them professional and academic knowledge, but were also willing to learn from them in their interactions so that they could improve together.  After that, in a touching moment, graduates read the eulogy of “Thank you” to express their gratitude to the government, society, MPI and their teachers.
